10 Most Underrated Green Day Songs

4. No One Knows - Kerplunk

Most of your average Green Day fans points to Dookie as the moment where the band first started to get good. While their first go-arounds on indie labels had a few rough edges, this was the Green Day that the masses fell in love with, from Welcome to Paradise to Basket Case. Even though not many songs on Dookie were meant to be taken seriously, its predecessor Kerplunk showed that these guys could tug at your heartstrings if the time called for it.

Centered around the death of Billie Joe's father, No One Knows is one of the few slowburns in the group's first releases. Compared to other reflective tracks on the album like Christie Road, this song taps into something that feels like a fresh wound, almost as if Billie is still trying to move on years after his father lost his battle with cancer. When he sings the first line "Why should my fun have to end?," you can almost see that little child behind his eyes that would be revisited in Wake Me Up When September Ends.

Despite Billie's tragic lyrics, the real savior of the song is Mike Dirnt's bass work, which perfectly captures that angsty heartache that goes through everyone's minds after losing someone. It's never a hard life to lead, but No One Knows at least gives you a friend to help you move forward even in the darkest of times.
