10 Most Underrated Members Of Legendary Rock Bands
3. Ray Manzarak - The Doors
The arrival of the Doors on the Sunset Strip was when the rock world started to get a little bit weird. At a time when the Beatles were still telling us that all we needed was love, here was the Lizard King Jim Morrison telling us to light his fire. Although things could have easily divulged into chaos from day one, Ray Manzarak always served as the resident intellectual of the group.
Having been well versed in keyboard work from his time in school, there was always a little bit of sophistication that came whenever you heard Ray man the keys, sounding like something that could have come out of the inventions of the classical music world. The more you listen to the risks that the band took though, Ray more often than not was leading the charge, being able to play everything from psychedelic rock in the early days to eventually dipping his toes into jazz and blues towards the end of their run.
And if you've seen any footage of the band live, you know that they never had a set bassist throughout their career either, with Ray playing the main bass part live on another organ while he played the main piano part on his main piano. Most band members find themselves multitasking from time to time, but the amount of musical weight that Ray had to carry back in the day puts him one notch below a full blown circus act.
