10 Most Underrated My Chemical Romance Songs

It's about time that we all stop calling the entire genre of emo rock just a phase. Instead of the usual crybabys that everyone liked to poke fun at back in the day, there was a lot of genuine pain being expressed in there and a mountain of talent to be explored. And let's face it, if it were all just a phase, My Chemical Romance wouldn't have held up nearly this well.

Ever since becoming Hot Topic's favorite band back in the day, most other scene bands could only dream of having the songwriting power that these guys had. Outside of their more celebrated works like Welcome to the Black Parade, there are just as many spooky songs and adrenaline pumping anthems in their roster to get any casual rock fan into the genre as well, nevermind just emo rock.

And the gas never really ran out for them either. From their first few recordings to ending it out with Danger Days, there has always been a baseline level of kickass that goes into every single MCR record, and it was probably better for them to leave their fanbase on good terms rather than staying too long at the party. Even though there may have been some old wounds tied up in those records, that doesn't mean that we forget either.

As far as the mainline albums for MCR are concerned, Conventional Weapons doesn't really have too much to offer. Outside of the occasional fun song like Boy Division, there's a lot of leftovers that feel more like they should have stayed B-sides instead of the band's true swan song. In between them all though, there's a ballad that deserves a spot alongside the band's best.

From a band that was always known to be on the theatrical side of the spectrum, the Light Behind Your Eyes is about the most heartfelt power ballad you could have expected from My Chemical Romance, with Gerard Way giving an impassioned vocal performance. There's also a lot of bombast behind him as well, with the rest of the band not veering onto autopilot and making a sweeping backing track that sounds like it should be at the end of a movie.

Granted, since this thing doesn't really tie in to any of the major plot points of Danger Days or The Black Parade, it makes sense why it never really fit on those more theatrical experiences. Then again, we could have had the entire MCR story go a different way. In an alternate universe, this is one of the highlights on the next extravagant concept album that My Chemical Romance took on during the 2010's.
