5. Out of the Vein - Third Eye Blind
The public at large has seemed to bypass Third Eye Blind as a one album wonder. Even though Semi Charmed Life may have been your favorite song in high school, there was no way that these sunshine rockers were going to hold up to the passage of time, right? Well, as much as some of their songs have become dated, Out of the Vein was a lot more solid than you might remember.
Then again, it's not like anyone thought this was going to be a hit or anything. It had already been years since How's It Going to Be was on the charts, so to hear them go in a slightly different direction should have probably been a disaster from the word go. From a writing perspective though, this might be one of the most overlooked albums of the late '90s, with Stephen Jenkins coming into his own as a genius writer of power pop.
Yeah, the doot doos from a few years ago have no place here, with much of this album honing in on some bulletproof hooks and a few decent guitar moments that many wondered whether they could even pull off. As much as the album cover might look like in belongs in the bargain bin, it's still one of the best kept secrets of the entire decade.
