10 Most Underrated Rock Albums Of The '90s
4. Recovering the Satellites - Counting Crows
It's never an easy task to follow up an amazing debut album. You've had your whole life to make some of the best music that you could ever think of...now just do it again in a handful of months while you're touring. Even if bands try (and fail) to repeat the formula, you have to give it to Counting Crows for taking a few more risks on Recovering the Satellites.
From the very first track, you can tell that the sad sack nobodies from Mr. Jones actually grew up a little bit, with songs that have a lot more punch to them. Instead of the classic rock tinged tunes that could blare out of coffeehouses, these are actually some quality rock music that wouldn't feel too out of place next to the Smashing Pumpkins of the world.
While A Long December might be the most remembered song from this era, it's still probably mid tier when you have stuff like Angels of the Silences to compete with. It's a shame we never got to see this kind of Counting Crows much longer, as they disappeared into the shadows and are resting on their laurels these days. But they did have Recovering the Satellites, and that put them above Matchbox Twenty for the rest of their days.
