10 Most Underrated Rock Ballads Of All Time
8. Last Night on Earth - Green Day
By the end of the '00s, Green Day found themselves in a bit of an awkward spot. Even though many bands would give their entire musical career to create something like American Idiot, there comes a point when you start to get nervous of how you're going to top that. It's never an easy decision, and yet Billie Joe Armstrong found the way through by growing up as a songwriter.
First of all, it's jarring to hear a Green Day song start off with a piano, much less one like Last Night on Earth, which is practically carried on it. Instead of the usual walls of guitars, there's a lot more tenderness in this song's delivery, as Billie Joe sings about all the things that he wishes that he could say to his love while he is away. As the track goes on, Mike Dirnt even gets in on the action with some of the most beautiful background harmonies of his entire career.
Keep in mind, we're still talking about the same guys who brought you songs like Longview years before, and now they're making something that has the ability to break your heart if you're not careful. The Beatles influence is strong with this one, but if they happened to hear it, chances are the Fabs would have probably given their seal of approval for this.
