10 Most Underrated Rock Songs Of The 2000s
5. But Honestly - Foo Fighters
The grand consensus in the rock genre has come with giving the Foo Fighters a bit of a pass. Considering Dave Grohl's role in changing the entire landscape of music with Nirvana, he can pretty much get away with anything he wanted in rock so long as it had a nice melody over the top. Even with all his accolades though, Echoes Silence Patience and Grace had one undiscovered gem in But Honestly.
Taken as a challenge to combine the mellow and harsh sides of the group, most of this record's love comes at the expense of the Pretender, which became one of the most powerful songs in the Foos' canon. Arriving at the end of the record though is this song, which shows the other strength that Grohl has learned after all these years: dynamics.
For most of the tune, Grohl accompanies himself on acoustic guitar as the rest of the band files in. That's just the start of the madness though, as the final verse gives way to something even more powerful, with Taylor Hawkins building and building his tom tom rolls with intensity. Not even waiting for another chorus, the entire track opens up at the final minute to bring us one of the most lively guitar riffs Grohl had ever made. Outside of the more classic stuff like Learn to Fly and Everlong, this deserves a place in the hallowed halls of rock riffs.
