10 Most Underrated Singers In Modern Rock

7. Laura Jane Grace

As punk rock's most controversial figure, Grace has been screaming and crooning Against Me's fantastic catalogue for decades.

Grace's voice has changed a good bit since Against Me's first album in 2002, which isn't uncommon, but she has clearly mastered her vocal range and diction. Her distinct sound can be heard most effectively in the acoustic video for Because of the Shame. The heart-breaking song could not be sung as effectively by anyone else, as Grace's true passion and emotion really drive it home.

For further examples of that iconic voice, listen to Paralytic States, We're Breaking Up, Norse Truth, Thrash Unreal, Dead Friend, Rebecca, and Born of the FM Waves of the Heart.

Grace may not have the most dynamic voice of the singers on this list, but what she does do is incredibly powerful and impactful. It's a voice that takes what the likes of Johnny Rotten and Joe Strummer did in the early days of punk, and infuses it with melody and emotion.

Against Me are arguably the best modern punk band there is, and Grace is entirely the reason why.
