10 Most Underrated Songs (On Classic Albums)
9. Truth Hits Everybody - The Police
The Police were one of the weirdest acts to come out of the New Wave movement in the late 70's. Whereas bands like Devo and Talking Heads were making music that felt deliberately artificial, this band managed to still have a heart beneath all of the nervy guitar riffs.
Their debut Outlandos D'Amour is an absolute essential for the 70's, with songs that range from reggae fusion to old time rock and roll to indescribable tracks like "Can't Standing Losing You." Songs like "Roxanne" and "So Lonely" are more than worth your time, but the B-side sleeper "Truth Hits Everybody" is one of the black sheep on this record. Compared to the other tracks, the relentless energy of the tune makes all of the preceding tracks feel subdued and almost lethargic.
There's not a ton going on in terms of guitar effects, but the heavy syncopated verses giving way to manic sounding choruses is something that was incredibly unique for the time. Though Sting gets a lot of credit for the band's tunes, Stewart Copeland really gives his all on this track, with the drums sounding almost too fast but still right in the groove. The Police may have been labelled as post-punk by some, but "Truth Hits Everybody" really lived up to the punk side of that title.
