10 Music Artists Who Disappeared From The Limelight

8. Bob Dylan

Towards the end of the '60s, it seemed like you could get no privacy if your name was Bob Dylan. Ever since crossing over into the rock world on Highway 61 Revisited, he had quickly picked up the mantle as the voice of his generation, with every rock fan waiting for his next album with baited breath. It's a big responsibility, but not one that Dylan was willing to take on.

This is one of the more interesting case studies since no one can pinpoint exactly when Dylan faded from view. Though many have speculated just sheer burnout, the most popular theory is that Dylan took his sabbatical from stardom after suffering a near fatal motorcycle accident and recuperating in New York, which later became immortalized in "American Pie" as "the jester on the sidelines in a cast."

As acts like Beatles and Stones were progressing with each passing album, Dylan's output around this time showed him in his folksy mode, where he tried to distance himself from his messianic persona. Though he would occasionally write with friends like the Band and George Harrison, Dylan felt much more suited to the background, trying to shake off the larger than life reputation he put on.

Though he eventually returned to making his own music, Dylan's self imposed exile showed everyone that he was just as human as everyone else.
