10 Music Videos That Were Actually Made By Famous Directors

4. Rian Johnson - Woke Up New (The Mountain Goats)

If you don't know who Rian Johnson is, don't worry - you will soon. Announced as the director of Star Wars Episode VIII, Johnson's career is on the brink of detonation. His previous films include cult-favourite Brick and the critically acclaimed sci-fi flick Looper, which stars Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. When he's not making films, Johnson is singing praises for The Mountain Goats, one of indie's most beloved yet best-kept secrets. Johnson was asked to direct the music video for the band's 2006 song Woke Up New when front man John Darnielle noticed a reference in Brick's closing credits. The video is shot to look like a single take, pulling back repeatedly to reveal the action is being displayed on various screens. Like in Brick, Johnson employs dark blues and greens to create a sombre tone concurrent with the mood of the song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bSdRizGYb0
