10 Musicians That Will Never Work With Each Other Again
3. Everyone vs. Dennis DeYoung - Styx
For most of the greatest rock bands out there, it's good to look at the band dynamic like a democracy. After all, if you're going to work with people and make sure that everyone is satisfied, it's not really the best idea to just force your ideas upon them without asking. If you're in Styx though, you can only point your finger at Dennis DeYoung for screwing everything up.
Despite Tommy Shaw and James JY Young getting credits for songs on every album, it was clear that Dennis was steering the ship in the beginning, with albums like the Grand Illusion being mostly his vision. Once the success came calling though, Dennis started taking the reigns a bit too much, instead writing lush power ballads like Babe rather than the hard rock everyone else wanted. It didn't help that things were getting way too conceptual as well, with almost every other record being tied to a concept.
By the time that the band finally got to Kilroy Was Here, DeYoung's robot dreams was the last straw, leaving Tommy Shaw to quit the band in protest. Though Dennis managed to keep them afloat for a little while longer, the reunion tour of the original lineup ended with a whimper, with DeYoung being kicked to the curb and everyone continuing on without him ever since. With lawsuits being flown around in the press and the days of Mr. Roboto being firmly in the rearview, don't expect the OG lineup of Styx's heavyhitters to be getting together anytime soon.
