10 Near Perfect Punk Rock Albums
3. Dig Me Out - Sleater-Kinney (1997)
Riot grrrl culture emerged during the '90s along with third-age feminism. The sub-culture was spawned from the punk scene in Washington State. A yearning for more female representation in rock and a desire to establish women as an equal driving force, motivated a number of groups to push a more female inclusive message.
This album is fuelled by heartbreak, anger and passion. It's one part a reconciliation between lead singer Corin Tucker and guitarist/ co-vocalist Carrie Brownstein - who had just ended a romantic relationship - and an exploration of female empowerment.
One More Hour, hears the two vocalists play out their break-up. Corin Tucker mourns the loss of the relationship, emotionally wailing the line "I needed it" as Brownstein's stoically sympathises, but insists she needs to let go. It seems like a cathartic moment for both. Little Babies was another stand out track. Tucker wrote the song to represent the duality of wanting to be a mother, while rejecting the outdated gender roles that came with motherhood.
This is a punk album that gave a voice to a rarely heard group in the genre.
