10 Near Perfect Rock Albums Of The 2020s
1. Heaven To A Tortured Mind - Yves Tumor (2020)
Yves Tumour rests somewhere between Prince and David Bowie. His latest record is a triumphant reminder that music still has new territories to explore.
The opening track will have you asking yourself if you're listening to a Childish Gambino soundtrack for a Tarantino western. Once the vocals drop in, you realise this is a world apart from Gambino's "Awaken, My Love!", however. That record brought soul and funk into the 21st Century, but this album attaches rocket boosters to both genres and fires them into the future.
The flowing duet of Tumour and Diana Gordon sets a sexually vibrant scene for the albums highlight, Kerosene! The track is punctuated by a face melting guitar solo that Funkadelic would be proud of; it's the point of ecstasy, before both singers continue their sensual vocal interplay. Tumour keeps things grounded as Gordon cries out in ever more soulful expressions of desire - reaching moments that are comparable to Sinead O'Conner in her hey day. It's a track that transcends musical era; sounding both like a Prince classic, and something from a time not yet come.
Space age, gospel rock is the future and Yves Tumour is the person to take us there.
