4. Band Aid 20 - "Do They Know It's Christmas?"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5vMdmajxFY Christmas songs - let's face it - are annoying. Charity songs - being realistic - are short-lived. For 25 days a year, we have to endure the banal drivel that the radio stations pump into our ears to gee up the nation for the holiday season. Charity songs (whilst noble) often don't last much longer than the month it takes to generate the revenue they demand. Cynicism aside, 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' has both a worthwhile cause and longevity. Focusing on the contrast between a 'Christmas' in Africa and the capitalist mulch we are fed in the UK - the most moving line sings "there won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time". It encourages people tucking into sprouts and pigs-in-blankets to think about those less fortunate than themselves. And to cap it all: it's a great song.
