10 Overly Hated Musicians In Rock History

4. Bono - U2

It's not that hard to see why U2 has had such a divided reputation among rock fans since their inception.

While there are many people claiming that they are one of the greatest rock bands to even walk the Earth, the amount of lip service being given to their non-musical ventures make them look a lot more pretentious than they actually are. If there was ever a poster child for that kind of behavior though, Bono pretty much fills in every box.

From the start of U2's career, you could tell Bono had a bit more on his agenda than just your standard rock and roll lyrics, which became abundantly clear on Rattle and Hum. For all of its great music, the movie itself is the reason why U2 is laughed at now, showing all of Bono's preachy monologues and ventures for human unity amplified to the nth degree. Before we chastise him though, are these really all that bad?

Aside from talking about strong social reforms, Bono has always been a phenomenal performer, having more emotional range and power in his voice than almost any other '80s rock singer could hope for.

Above all else, Bono is a man who has stuck to his principles, believing that the power of rock and roll can go beyond just a couple of chords and a big heart. Frontmen are all known to be a bit pompous anyway, so why not have some love for the pride of Ireland?
