10 Perfect 2000s Rock Albums With No Bad Songs
1. Funeral - Arcade Fire (2004)
Man was this one hell of a debut album. Canadian rockers Arcade Fire didn't make things easy for their future selves with this record. It was a tough album to top.
As was the trend with art-rock albums of the decade, Funeral cut a fine line between optimistic rock ballads and melancholic outburst of passion. This album was a rollercoaster, it's impossible to sit through its 48 minute run time and not flit through a collider scope of emotions.
In a record full brilliant songs there was nevertheless several stand out moments. Track one Neighbourhood 1 (Tunnels) set the mood for what would follow, with Win Butler showcasing his unique vocals that at times broke into erratic outcries of passion. But the emotional core of the album came in the form of the single Wake Up.
The song encapsulated everything that Arcade Fire was capable of doing. The lyrics warned about unconsciously drifting though life but the joyful instrumental crescendo seemed to represent the optimistic possibilities of what happens when one wakes up.
There isn't many higher accolades a song can receive then having David Bowie perform a version of it.
