10 Perfect 2010s Rock Albums With No Bad Songs

8. An Awesome Wave - Alt-J (2012)

alt-J broke into the mainstream with a debut record that fused indie rock, folktronica and a touch of sonic insanity. It was an album that breathed new life into a scene that was becoming derivative.

Almost ten years later, this album still holds up. The bizarre instrumental rhythms are matched by the unnerving, but intriguing vocal approach of frontman Joe Newman. Drawing from pop culture, historical characters and and significant moments in time, Newman's lyrics often cover obscure and sometimes harrowing subject matters. Matilda, made reference to the movie Léon: The Professional; Taro, told the story of Robert Capa and Gerda Taro, two journalist who died covering wars during the 20th Century; And, Fitzpleasure referenced the rape of a character in Last Exit To Brooklyn, a novel which tackles the bleak underworld of lower class Brooklyn.

An Awesome Wave, incorporated elements that only the most daring of musicians would think to combine. Lyrics sung in the style of a Gregorian chant, melodies that draw heavily from traditional folk, new-wave bass lines and dub step inspired drops - this was 21st Century music at its most exciting.
