10 Perfect '90s Rock Albums That Are Ridiculously Long

1. Blood Sugar Sex Magik - Red Hot Chili Peppers

For all of the pedigrees that the Red Hot Chili Peppers have these days, their entire musical upbringing almost seemed like a bit of a goof. Though everyone seemed to take their musicianship seriously, their origins actually started from them just goofing around with some funky sounds and seeing what came of it. Once Rick Rubin entered the picture though, the Peppers reached a concentrated level of kickass.

While every other Peppers project was a much more streamlined affair before Blood Sugar, this is the first record that is packed to the gills with amazing tracks, having an unbridled energy that starts from Power of Equality and sustains itself all the way to the end. The Peppers do have their certain cliches in their songs, but there's a lot more eclectic sounds on this record as well, like writing the closest thing to a ballad that they would ever create on Under the Bridge and even breaking out the acoustics on the song I Could Have Lied.

This may have been the record that sent them into the stratosphere, but it also proved to be too much for John Frusciante, who left the band in the middle of the tour because he couldn't handle the pressure of being one of the biggest bands in the world. This was the beginning of the rollercoaster ride for the Peppers though, and nearly every record since then has made for a marathon session of funk rock perfection.
