10 Perfect '90s Rock Albums That Are Ridiculously Long

6. Use Your Illusion 1/2 - Guns N Roses

In the wake of the hair metal bands getting way too poodly for rock fans Guns N Roses was the kind of retro rock and roll that we needed. Off the strength of Appetite for Destruction, the band had become one of the biggest draws to Sunset during the late '80s, giving fans a new guitar hero in Slash and turning Axl Rose into one of the most off the rails frontmen of all time. They were about to grow up in the next decade, and Use Your Illusion was almost too much for people to take.

Looking to bury the sound of Appetite, Axl Rose came up with the concept of splitting Use Your Illusion into a double album of all new material, while also bringing in the best production in the game to help realize his vision. Though some of these songs are among the best that the band have ever written, you can definitely hear the band fracturing as well, stripping away a lot of the street side of their sound on songs like November Rain and Estranged.

This may have been their second proper studio creation, but they seem to understand the double album experience most of the time, bringing out the piano ballad November Rain, staying true to their more rock and roll ambitions on some of the harder songs like Right Next Door to Hell, and somehow finding a way to combine the two on Civil War. While this was the last proper Guns N Roses record for a long time, Use Your Illusion is the one record that has a little something for every stripe of GNR fan.
