10 Perfect Heavy Metal Songs To Listen To When You're Angry

3. Sepultura - Refuse/Resist

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ODNxy3YOPU Sepultura make no qualms about who their anger is directed at in this anti-establishment protest song. From the 1993 album Chaos A.D, Refuse/Resist is the best showcase of what made the four piece a force to be reckoned with in the metal world whilst simultaneously introducing their Brazilian influences to a western audience (among the first to incorporate world music into the genre). From the off it's clear they are a band who wear their heritage on their sleeve with primitive tribal drumming opening proceedings before launching into an explosive cocktail of pummeling drums and and low end heavy riffs. Singer and guitarist Max Cavalera uses this as the perfect backdrop to rally against social injustices (I'm sick of this, Inside the state, War is created, No man's land, What is this s**t?!) in his trademark growls. Innovations aside, the song stands on its own because the band play it with great conviction and sincerity. This is the sound of tanks lining the streets and mass riots breaking out, a visceral component lacking within many contemporary acts of the genre. Police brutality and similar social issues would be explored further on later releases but none could top the heady mix found on this gem. The band would eventually break apart and band turmoil plagued them at the end but not before delivering a well needed reality check to the genre at a time when not many others were. The culmination of their thrash days informed by a more groove based form of metal made this 90's protest anthem the perfect rage fueled concoction. Angriest Lyric: "Raging crowd, Burning cars, Bloodshed starts, Who'll be alive?!".
