10 Perfect Hit Songs That Are Insanely Long
2. Rapper's Delight - Sugar Hill Gang
Right around the start of the ‘80s, hip hop didn’t really have a proper name. Still being a goof around session in the disco clubs around New York, there were people willing to just spit some rhymes over the beat of a song. This may have just been done by DJs to keep the beat going, but Sugarhill Gang knew that they had something here with Rapper’s Delight.
It’s not out of the question to consider this one of the first real rap songs to ever be made, but it also comes with the same disco trappings that happen as well. These were songs that were meant to lull you into a groove, and the original version of this track certainly does, ramping it up to just under 15 minutes on the original version of the song.
While nothing on the charts really has the right to be that long, it never feels boring when Sugarhill Gang are spitting, finding different ways to keep the beat going and even switching up their flow a few times to keep things interesting. One of the main reasons why this had such a crossover appeal was just how weird it sounded, not really having too much in common with anything else on the radio at the time. This wasn’t just a little goof off project though…this was the beginning of a new art form that was about to take over the world.
