10 Perfect Rock Albums From The LA Alternative Scene
6. Red Hot Chili Peppers: Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991)
There aren’t many groups who scream LA alt-rock like the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They embody everything there is to love or hate about the place. They’re forthcoming about their struggles with drugs; they're shameless about the pursuit of sex; and they espouse hippie dippy sentiments of love and unity at every turn. And of course, they incessantly references California as the greatest place on the earth. It all makes for some damn good music.
Although the group's fourth studio album, Mother's Milk, helped push them into the limelight, creatively they were somewhat stunted by the overbearing producing style of Michael Beinhorn. Under the nurturing guide of Rick Rubin, however, they flourished. Rubin converted a mansion in the Hollywood Hills into a studio. The group moved in for a number of weeks to record their fifth album. With no other thought but music, they crafted one of the most seminal alt-rock records of the '90s.
There’s the outrageous sexuality of Sir Psycho Sexy; the raw confession of Under The Bridge, and the funked out wizardry of Give It Away and Funky Monks. Sit back and enjoy.
