10 Perfect Rock Albums From The LA Alternative Scene

5. Fishbone: The Reality Of My Surroundings (1991)

Fishbone came up in the early '80s, alongside the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Indeed, both groups would inform one another's early sound to no end. By the early '90s, the Chili Peppers had largely discarded their funk oriented sound - albeit Flea's bass would always contain at least a modicum of the sauce - but Fishbone stuck it out.

Their third full-length record demonstrated the wildly varying musical styles of the LA underground. Although they retained a rock guitar core throughout, they flavoured the album with equal parts, funk, soul, ska and punk. This will be the most eclectic sounding record you'll find on this list, and if you've never sampled Fishbone, you'll be thankful for it. With no less then seven core members performing on this record - augmented by a litany of session musicians - they elicit the same joyous energy as Parliament-Funkadelic.

You'll be helpless to resit busting a move to the opening number, Fight The Youth - an urge that's further encouraged by So Many Millions. Before you're done getting down, however, you'll be presented with one of the most electrifying guitar leads you've ever heard. It will be enough to sell you on the rest of the album. Get ready for a raucous ride through the jazz/ska fusion of Housework and the George Clinton inspired, jaunt of Babyhead.
