10 Perfect Rock Albums Of The 2000s
6. Attack & Release - The Black Keys (2008)
The Black Keys finally got the mainstream recognition they deserved in the last decade, with critically acclaimed album Brothers (2010) followed closely with El Camino (2011), but in 2008 they released Attack & Release.
The album was their first foray with a big time producer, recruiting Danger Mouse to capture their raw blues-infused brand of rock. It's an album that anyone who's a fan of their later works needs to hear, and it certainly paved the way to making The Black Keys one of the most celebrated rock acts of the last 20 years.
Known for being a band consisting merely of drummer Patrick Carney and guitarist/singer Dan Auerbach, the sheer wall of sound these guys bombard you with is damn right astonishing. But, they knew when to show restraint on this album, with the opening tack reminiscent of something you would hear from an Alabama Shakes record; there's a lot of soul to this album.
The album was a real improvement on earlier works, with songs feeling far more developed and fully formed, whilst still managing to hold onto that feeling of two guys jamming out in a garage. The track I Got Mine was a great example of this and you could already hear hints of what would come with their follow up records.
How do you perfect the already perfect? Brothers.
