10 Perfect Rock Albums That Everyone Hated Making

6. Hysteria - Def Leppard

There's a common belief that Def Leppard can't really make quality songs without the help of producer Mutt Lange. Known for whipping his artists into shape, the years with Mutt behind the board brought you the Def Leppard songs that you know and love today, from Photograph to Bringin on the Heartbreak. Right when they were on the cusp of something great though, every single setback hit them at the same time.

First you had Mutt actually not signing on to produce Hysteria, which sent the band into a creative funk trying to find the right producer. While they still had their chops down, their way of producing the songs never really clicked with the same precision that Mutt had, and the Christmas holiday wasn't much better. After initially taking a break for a few weeks, drummer Rick Allen was involved in a car crash and lost his arm, which would have probably ended the band right there.

In a stunning act of camaraderie, the incident brought the band closer together and even convinced Mutt to get involved properly on the record. After a homecoming show at the Monsters of Rock festival, the band returned to the studio with an axe to grind, leaving behind the initial version of the album and re recording everything, down to making the now iconic Pour Some Sugar On Me in just a few days. Things may have seemed cursed in the beginning, but there was no chance that anything was going to stop the band from delivering the goods.
