10 Perfect Rock Singles Released In Summer

9. Bob Dylan: Like A Rolling Stone (1965)

Following the release of Bringing It All Back Home (March 1965) - Dylan's first record to feature an electric backing band - the former darling of folk faced intense backlash from fans. He followed the album up with a tour of England where Dylan was met with even more ridicule.

On his return to the States Dylan recorded a single that would become his most celebrated piece of work to date. Set to a jaunty piano melody, augmented by electric guitar leads and a Hammond organ, Dylan's lyrics were a scathing, resentful and honest expression, recounting the tough lessons of life.

The six-minute single was released against the better judgment of Columbia Records, who feared that its length and folk-rock style would make it unsuited for radio. The summer following the single's release Dylan returned to the UK on tour, where once again he was booed for his new sound. One disgruntled fan famously yelled "Judas" at the singer, to which Dylan responded by turning to his group and saying "Play it f**king loud!" before launching into an explosive version of "Like A Rolling Stone".
