10 Perfect Rock Singles Released In Summer
6. Red Hot Chili Peppers: Give It Away (1991)
This track opened up the doors of success for the Chili Peppers. Up until their fifth studio album Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991) the group hadn't managed to break into the mainstream. They had acquired a name for themselves as one of the most energetic and entertaining live acts on the underground scene, and amassed a loyal following of fans but their charisma hadn't translated to a record.
Under the guidance of Rick Rubin, that all changed. Blood Sugar captured the group's enthusiasm for rock, and exhibited their ability to play funk music like a bunch of punk rockers. Throwing elements of heavy metal, alt rock and rap into the mix, it was a wildly distinct sound.
The lead single was just the thing to get people hooked. John Frusciante delivered a wildly catchy guitar lead, Flea slapped out the funk, and Anthony Kiedis delivered his stream of conscious nonsense with a nasal staccato, that was both bizarre and captivating.
Despite having absolutely no clue what the man is saying in this song, it's hella fun to join in with.
