10 Perfect Songs From Terrible Bands
5. Far Away - Nickelback
Ever since Nickelback's reign of terror in the '00s, there seems to have been a little change of heart when it comes to their back catalog. Much like the Star Wars prequels, the band's career trajectory has gone from being one of the biggest things in the world to the worst bands in history, and then looping back around to fans actually digging them again. While they might not be ready for full redemption just yet, Far Away might be one of the biggest indicators of why they should be remembered.
As much as Chad Kroeger talked about writing songs based on what sounds popular at the time, Far Away's attempt at a country rock hybrid actually suits them a lot better, giving Chad's vocals a break from screaming and actually tapping into something a little more vulnerable. While lyrics of a long distance relationship might not be the most thought provoking thing for a travelling rock musician to think of, Chad is selling it 100%, talking about how he can't wait to get back to his girl back home and almost combining the grit of James Hetfield with his usual grungy sound.
There's more to Nickelback than just Chad though, and the rest of the band are no slouches either, from the bass lifting the chorus up at exactly the right time to just the slightest hints of slide guitar brought into the mix. Nickelback might not make many people's all time favorite bands list, but when you hear songs like this, it's hard to argue with the few fans that are still ride or die for them.
