10 Perfect Songs On Terrible Albums
5. X-Kid - Green Day
Billie Joe Armstrong hasn't made it a secret that he wasn't in the best place when making Green Day's infamous trilogy of albums. Although there are some bright moments on these records, Billie's dependence on pills around this time made for some of the spottiest Green Day projects ever made, to the point where he considers the entire thing to have been entirely pointless. In between the more forgettable stuff, there are a few moments where he can tug on your heartstrings.
Though X-Kid is just your traditional Green Day single on the surface, Billie actually took the lyrics of this song from an experience that happened with one of his friends that had passed away. After being the rough and tumble kid back in the '90s, this song frames the narrator as lost in his old age, being too old to be so dumb and feeling like the rest of the world has left him in the dust.
As much as he might try to relive his glory days, he knows that there's no way that he can return back to his old stomping grounds anymore, becoming a shell of a man instead of the freewheeling punk rocker that he had always wanted to be. Billie may be singing about himself, but this song is more for the entirety of Generation X: those lost souls that will be mentally stranded in the '90s for the rest of their days.
