10 Perfect Songs That Were Written Incredibly Fast
4. Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N Roses
There was a good chance that the first era of Guns N Roses had the potential to fall apart at any moment. The kind of shenanigans that we've seen from Axl Rose at the top weren't really anything new at the beginning, and the street gang mentality of the band was a lot more seedy when they were cutting their teeth on the club scene in Los Angeles. Everyone had an understanding of what this kind of gutter rat life was like, and Welcome to the Jungle came about almost like second nature to them.
As Slash remembers, most of Welcome to the Jungle came together in just an afternoon, taking only a few hours to come up with the basic skeleton of the song as Axl spewed out his venom about life day by day. There's a lot more that goes into a song like this than just a couple of riffs though, and the real magic behind it came when they took it into the studio, with Slash playing that descending riff right at top of the song that makes you feel like you're going all the way down to the back alleys of West Hollywood, with no hope for the weak to survive.
There's actually a lot more about this song that meets the eye, saying a lot about the music industry that comes from Hollywood and how it's just as easy to make it big as it is to be spit back out onto the street without a care in the world. It's definitely a dog eat dog environment most of the time, but even with the heavy hitters like Motley Crue still on the rise, there was no one who could hold a candle to the World's Most Dangerous Band.
