10 Pop Songs That Artists Want You To Forget
7. We Didn't Start the Fire - Billy Joel
In the world of rock history, Billy Joel occupies a weird space among the other piano players. He might not have been as fiery as a Jerry Lee Lewis or even as flamboyant as Elton John, but the songs that he sang were a whole lot more sophisticated than what you were getting out of your traditional pop music at the time. As the '80s wore on, he had enough songs under his belt to fill up an entire stadium with classic tunes...so he didn't try anymore.
That's not to say that We Didn't the Fire is one of the worst songs ever made. Though it has gotten its fair share of ridicule both then and now for being too nostalgic and tied together with a nothing chorus, Joel still knows his way around a hook and can still sell it when he wants to. When you flash forward to today, the Piano Man almost sees the song more as a joke than a fully fleshed out piece of work.
Look no further than the past tours that he has done, where he either goes over the top during it and one show where he got through half the song only to just scrap playing it because there's better songs that he could be playing. If anything, that just shows you the nature of what gets on the charts. It's not always a measure of talent, and even Billy's throwaways can find their way on top every now and again.
