8. Gorillaz

Gorillaz arent exactly straight pop music. In fact, they are heavily influenced by a range of genres, including rock, hip-hop and electronica. This is natural given the variety of artists that have contributed to their music. The virtual band launched in 2001 as a project of ex-Blur frontman Damon Alburn. They captured attention with brooding lead single Clint Eastwood which (surprise, surprise) recalled the desolate whistling theme of The Good, The Bad & The Ugly. Since then they have gone on to release two more excellent albums. The single Feel Good Inc. is one of those songs that almost everybody seems to recognise and their lastest work Plastic Beach is one of the most ambitious efforts Ive heard in the past decade. The Gorillaz are easily the most experimental entry into this list. They are probably doing the most to change the face of modern pop so they definitely deserve a place on this list.
