10 Rare Muse Songs You've Probably Never Heard

9. Liquid State - The 2nd Law

There's no mistaking that the brains of Muse primarily comes from Matt Bellamy. Being the traditional lead singer and guitar player, it's clear that most of the power behind the songwriting comes from the way Bellamy interweaves different rock styles together. Then again, it's sometimes easy to forget just how much magic comes from the other guys in the band.

Though most of the 2nd Law has been treated as somewhat of a misfire by fans, there's a little Easter Egg at the end coming from bassist Chris Wolstenholme. As opposed to the typical Muse rockers, Bellamy takes a back seat on this outing and lets Chris man vocal duties, as he pours out his soul when discussing the problems he has had when overcoming alcoholism. Though the previous track Save Me lays the foundation out nicely, this is probably the closest to metal these guys have gotten since Stockholm Syndrome from back in the day, with riffs that weave in and out of each other while still feeling grounded.

While Matt's vocals are a lot more suited to Muse's traditional style, this is a welcome change of pace that shows just how much talent is happening underneath the surface. So next time you try to dismiss The 2nd Law as just the "dubstep" album, have a listen to this and see the headtrip that you're missing.
