on August 21st 1976, the Rolling Stones played their last show of the year at Hertfordshire’s Knebworth Park. It’s debated how many people were there that day, with the promoter claiming 104,000 whilst stage announcements that day declared 300,000. Either way, it’s safe to say there was an enormous mass of people there to see the Stones that day on one of the hottest days of the year, with the Stones being in their peak and playing through a 30-song set until just after 2 in the morning.

Like the ‘Goats Head Soup’ tour sweater, the Rolling Stones gave out tees to their road crew as well as friends, ones that weren’t available to buy from the merch stand or anywhere. What’s marvellous about the Knebworth tees is they feature a drawn knockoff of Obelix from the French comic book series Asterix carrying a large stone that reads ‘Stones at Knebworth 76’. It’s a fun goof on Obelix who’s known for carrying stones on his back with his superhuman strength. The Knebworth show is legendary in the career of the Rolling Stones so these shirts are valued at $9000 each. Copies of the shirt alone have reached $900 each. You have to think they surely double as the most expensive Asterix and Obelix t-shirt available too.
