10 Rock Albums That Get Way Too Much Hate
7. All Hope is Gone - Slipknot
It feels weird dunking on an album that's known to be one of the band's biggest successes, doesn't it? That's the nature of the beast sometimes, when something that's successful at the time ends up having diminishing returns in the long run. In the case of Slipknot though, the hate sometimes feels like it's coming as much from the band as it does from the Maggots.
Around the time they wrapped up touring for Vol. III, All Hope is Gone was the first album in their catalog to be made in Iowa, which never really sat well with the other members. Since there had always been some struggle to get their records done, having downtime to actually relax didn't work for them, especially when the producer could barely get them all in the studio. In between the sessions though, there are songs on here that deserve to be among Slipknot's best.
There might be a bit too many radio friendly singles in here like Sulfur or Dead Memories, but something like Gematria or Psychosocial are still some of the most savage Slipknot tracks that they have ever made. And as much as it's become a cliche, Snuff is one of the most celebrated songs in the band's catalog for a damn good reason, with Corey Taylor really wearing his heart on his sleeve. Some moments may feel like Slipknot by numbers, but that's still miles above what most other metal acts could dream of being.
