10 Rock Albums That Killed Artists' Careers

8. Music From the Elder - KISS

You'd be hardpressed to find too many people that would call KISS incredible musicians. Even though they were amazing entertainers and rock gods, the members themselves would tell you that they were never trying to be the intellectual band that would take you on a journey with their music. So who the hell told them it was a good idea to make a concept album about an extraterrestrial search for magical doors?

Though that concept seems far fetched, it's still probably the closest attempt to what's actually on here, with the band hooking up with superproducer Bob Ezrin for a by the numbers story revolving around The Chosen One. Since this was around the time that attention in the group was starting to wane, this ended up being their vain attempt to show a different side of the band.

Instead, this ended up being the final straw for the band, with Ace Frehley quitting the group in protest a few months after the record actually came out. Despite their dumpster fire, KISS did manage to pull a career resurrection with Creatures of the Night, which rocketed them back to their hard rocking roots. If only they hadn't decided that the future of music was with knockoff ELP songs, they could have waited out the late '70s.
