10 Rock Albums That Peak With The Final Song
4. (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd) - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Taking a very hard turn away from Hurt now and a song that will live on in meme form long after everyone has forgotten what it sounds like.
The debut album from country rock lads Lynyrd Skynyrd (the name of which will not be getting typed again) established the gang from Jacksonville as ones to watch in the music world.
Some of the band's best-known songs have a home on this record, including the more country-infused Tuesday's Gone and Simple Man. Whilst those two might be a hipster's choice, can you really argue against the epicness of Free Bird?
Skynyrd's ode to the travellin' lifestyle is known for a great many things. Its absurd length, it's killer guitar solos, getting shouted out at every single open mic night in history.
Seriously, it's a battle between this and Wonderwall for the "Most Jokingly Requested Song of All Time" award.
Free Bird has earned its reputation. A huge, balls-to-the-wall rocker in the truest sense of the word, the song pulls no punches and leaves absolutely nothing left in the tank.
There's a reason it still closes most Skynyrd shows today, although that might also just be to give the singer a rest.
