10 Rock Artists That Had Hit Singles Over A Decade Apart
3. Blondie - 18 Years
After a 17 year absence from the recording booth, new wave idols Blondie made their triumphant return to music with 1999's No Exit, a song about being stuck on a motorway.
Ok, that was a lie.
Debby Harry and the other ones that nobody cares about announced this comeback in a huge way with a song called Maria. Written by keyboard player Jimmy Destri about teenage desire, the track caught fire thanks to its soft rock appeal and Harry's powerful vocal performance during the chorus.
Apologise to anyone called Maria, who has had that chorus yelled at them at least once a week since the turn of the millennium.
Maria did not do well in the US, but it was a sensation in the UK, giving Blondie their first chart-topper since The Tide is High. Their most recent song to reach the top ten had been 1981's Rapture, meaning that 18 years had past since there was a whiff of peroxide in the British charts.
Fun fact, Rapture was the first US number one single to feature a "rap vocals", if you want to class Harry mumbling her way through a verse as rap.
