10 Rock Bands That Defined The 2000's
9. Queens Of The Stone Age
One genre that was hitting its commercial stride at the turn of the 90's was stoner rock. Bands like Sleep, Monster Magnet, and Kyuss had come out with great albums that hold up as some of the heaviest records ever made. So when Kyuss guitarist Josh Homme decided to leave and start another band, the results were destined for gargantuan results.
Queens of the Stone Age was born out of Homme's collaborations with many of his musical friends in the California desert. Over the years, the band has come to embody the sound of being just on the edge of sanity.
Homme has a much more consistent lineup today, with consistent members like Troy Van Leeuwen and Joey Castillo, but many big names like Dave Grohl, Trent Reznor, and even Elton John have made contributions to Queens records.
Queens have a reputation for never making the same album twice. However, the most concentrated version of their sound can be heard on 2002's Songs for the Deaf. It stands as Homme's magnum opus and a great introduction to their sound.
It's rock and roll for sure... just with a little more dirt in their boots.
