10 Rock Bands That Had More Than One Lead Singer
1. The Beatles
Most rockstars can only hope to have a great frontman. No matter how many times you try your hand at singing your songs, it won't make any difference to the public unless you have the right person out front to deliver it to legions of fans. A good frontman can take you anywhere, but the Beatles ended up having four different lead singers among their ranks.
As opposed to the early days of rock and roll with the main star out front, the Fab Four always worked well playing off each other's vocal styles, with John Lennon's powerful croon set up against the loverboy charm of Paul McCartney. In addition to just being tremendous singers, each member had a versatility in their voice, from McCartney's mix of elegant ballads and hard rock fury to Lennon running the gamut between avant garde surrealism and perfect pop tendencies.
A duo of that caliber would be good enough, but the addition of George Harrison gave an intellectual side to the group's material, with songs like Here Comes the Sun and Something feeling much more mature than your typical rock love song of the day. The Liverpool moptops even found time for Ringo Starr to have a crack on the mic, where his loveable charm gets a chance to shine on songs like With a Little Help From My Friends. The Beatles had enough songwriting power for four different groups, but when they actually came together, it was enough to shape the face of rock as we knew it.
