10 Rock Bands That Never Made A Bad Album
5. Tom Petty
Tom Petty is one of the few artists who you can say sounds like America. With each release, Petty has always maintained a distinctive sound that made you feel like you were driving through an open field in the middle of the heartland of the USA. After nearly 40 years of rock and roll under his belt, Petty was able to create the American sound one record at a time.
There's a lot that should be said about Petty's early work with the Heartbreakers, where he combined the old sounds of rock and roll with a punkish aggression that gave the world classics like "Breakdown" and "American Girl."
Once he hit his stride though, Petty kept refining his sound with every passing release, be it the dark energy behind songs like "Refugee" or the Eastern tinge of something like "Don't Come Around Here No More."
For a musician who started his career in the late 70's, it's a testament to his resilience that people consider his best work to be in the 90's, with solo albums like Wildflowers and Full Moon Fever becoming staples of rock radio.
We may have lost Petty back in 2017, but when going through the man's back catalog, we're left with a pure musical gold mine.
