10 Rock Bands That Never Made The Same Album Twice

9. Queen

Any fan of rock music knew they were going to be in for one hell of a trip the minute they saw Queen. Albeit, it's hard to really take something like this seriously when you have one of the most pompous rock star frontmen that the world has ever seen in Freddie Mercury. Even with that tongue in cheek presentation, these rock royals have managed to cover anything that suited their mood.

While starting off as a version of hard rock on steroids on their debut, Queen II already showed progression in Mercury coming to the forefront as a songwriter, incorporating everything from showtune fodder to some of the most fantastical images in rock and roll this side of Led Zeppelin. That was only the launchpad though, with a Night at the Opera and a Day at the Races reaching further into unchartered territory with straight up rock bombast on Bohemian Rhapsody and gospel on Somebody to Love.

By the time the '80s turned a corner, it turned out that they were only beginning to impress us, with the Game showcasing delves into everything from rockabilly to disco to funk. Even with the commercial thud of Hot Space, Mercury still maintained an insane track record up until succumbing to AIDS in 1991, even putting out one of his finest records in Innuendo while at death's door. While mortality may have claimed Queen, Mercury definitely succeeded in wanting his band to be the Cecil B. DeMille of Rock.
