10 Rock Bands That Outshine Their Lead Singer
2. Van Halen
Ok...now it's just getting a little too crazy. For as much chops as Van Halen might have, how the hell would they have gone on to superstardom without the frontman to end all frontmen David Lee Roth? While Roth was absolutely pivotal to Van Halen's rise to fame in the early days, there's a good argument to be made for the rest of the guys as larger than life personalities unto themselves.
Even though Michael Anthony's prominent role was in the background for most of the tours, the Van Halen brothers themselves had enough charisma in store for 3 completely different frontmen. It almost goes without saying the metric ton of charisma exploding out of Eddie Van Halen's guitar alone, as he created a sonic circus every time he tore into one of his insane tapping licks. Despite being initially overcome with stage fright, Eddie's massive amount of charm when behind the fretboard was enough to carry an entire show, which he often did at times.
On the other side of things, Alex Van Halen had the exact kind of debaucherous drumming style that fit perfectly with his brother, incorporating jungle rhythms that would have intrigued even the most passive of rock fans. No matter if it was Dave out front or even the Sammy Hagar years, the only way that you're making a lead singer change that drastic is if you have some amazing players to back them up.
