10 Rock Bands Who Had Horrible Original Names
2. Mookie Blaylock - Pearl Jam
If you're ever looking for bad band names, you'll strike gold if you look at any of the grunge bands from back in the day. From Nirvana's initial steps as Fecal Matter to the original glammy sounding Alice N Chains, the Pacific Northwest was not short of terrible beginnings for rock giants. Many of these could have made the list, but if there was that said it all for the scene, it would have to be Pearl Jam.
Formed out of the ashes of the band Mother Love Bone, the band already had great material like "Alive" and "Once," but not one moniker to wrap everything around. Not really caring to think of anything original, the band played some gigs as Mookie Blaylock, named after the famed NBA player of the same name.
Though it's questionable whether Blaylock himself would have minded, the band felt it might be better to find something original rather than coaxing off the fame of an NBA star. Originally thought to be about a certain jelly Eddie Vedder's grandmother made, Pearl Jam was decided upon by just randomly throwing the words together. The name Mookie Blaylock may have been over, but the band did think highly enough to name their debut Ten after the jersey number of their favorite player.
