10 Rock Music Albums That Divided Critics

1. Pink Floyd: Wish You Were Here (1975)

When you create an album as groundbreaking as Dark Side of The Moon you're always going to have a hard time following it up. This pressure plagued Pink Floyd to no end.

The production of Wish You Were Here was riddled with difficulties. The group struggled to match the same enthusiasm with which they had approached Dark Side. Drummer Nick Mason, was coming to terms with his divorce. And, Gilmour and Water's were starting to disagree more and more about the direction the group should be going in. On top of that, they had a sound engineer who was unfamiliar with the Abbey Road studio - at one point, completely ruining the original take of Shine On. The boys weren't off to a good start

After almost six months of tortured recording, and several more of mastering, the group eventually released one of the greatest records of all time. Contemporary critics were far from convinced, however. The attacks on the music business were dismissed as overt and unsubtle. Even the references to their former band mate Syd Barrett were taken as insincere due to the bluntness of the sentiment. In all, the concept was deemed unsophisticated and the music was labeled derivative.
