10 Rock Songs NOT Sung By The Lead Singer
1. Marigold - Nirvana
It's impossible to look at Nirvana and side step Kurt Cobain. His songwriting style and eccentric personality were such a big part of the band's sound that it practically radiated from his body whenever he went to pick up a guitar. Cobain's aura looms so large over the band's legacy that people tend to forget the birth of a completely new band at the end of Nirvana's run.
Though Cobain's death in 1994 left many fans heartbroken, the start of something completely different had started making its way to the forefront on one of their B-sides. Accompanying the band's single "Heart Shaped Box" was the song "Marigold," written by drummer Dave Grohl. As opposed to another heavy tune or punk sound experiment, this song was a subtle acoustic passage with Grohl flexing a bit of his vocal chops.
It was actually Kurt's suggestion to have it on the single, but once Nirvana imploded, Grohl managed to move on from the tragedy with the help of this song. After months of avoiding his problems, Grohl re-emerged with the Foo Fighters, with him stepping out from behind the kit and slowly easing into the frontman role.
It would have been interesting to see what Grohl could have done if Nirvana were still around, but "Marigold" serves as a bridge between Nirvana's final days and the Foos' humble beginnings.
