10 Rock Songs NOT Sung By The Lead Singer
2. Homecoming - Green Day
When Green Day were set to release their next record in 2003, American Idiot wasn't initially in the cards for them. After completing an entire albums' worth of songs, the band walked into the studio to find that their masters were stolen. Rather than re-record all the songs from scratch, everyone in the band started writing little snippets of tunes to pass the time.
Once Billie Joe Armstrong returned to the studio, he found that Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool had each written 30-second bits of songs entitled "Nobody Likes You" and "Rock n Roll Girlfriend." Immediately inspired, Armstrong wrote his own piece and started connecting the songs together. As soon as the band started rehearsing, they had created a 9 minute epic about returning to your old stomping grounds.
Coming at the end of the American Idiot album, the song is practically a round robin vocal session, as everyone makes their way through their respective sections of the song. In addition to their vocal performances, each member brings their A-game, with Armstrong backing Dirnt on his section and adding dirty rock and roll lead lines to Cool's old school romp.
Not only was this song a great way to pass the time in between sessions, but it became the start of the band's massive undertaking which brought them their most successful album yet.
