10 Rock Songs Ripped Off From Other Songs

5. Last Night - The Strokes

If there's anything that we've learned from the latest generation of rock stars, it's that they love them some Tom Petty. Aside from the flagrant copying that Red Hot Chili Peppers did with Mary Jane's Last Dance on Dani California, you also have Sam Smith copying the same chords and vocal melodies from I Won't Back Down for their song Stay With Me. On our next stop in genre hopping, we come to the garage rock sphere with Last Night by the Strokes.

I'd almost be willing to give them a pass though. Ever since they started, The Strokes have always boasted their for the '70s in one form or another, so it's no surprise that you'd think that Tom would on their radar. But they're not even slightly ashamed of their cribbing, even admitting that they stole the intro for this song from the opening to American Girl, down to the signature guitar hook playing over and over again.

While Petty was perfectly within his rights to take legal action, he actually was pretty kind to the Strokes, even laughing the whole thing off and congratulating them on making their success based off of his tune. Aside from making some of the greatest heartland rock in the world, apparently Tom is also one of the most laid back people ever when it comes to people stealing his work.
