10 Rock Songs That Waited Years Before Being Released

3. Gimme Some Truth - John Lennon

Whenever you sit down to write a protest song, you’re always playing with fire just a little bit. For all of the shots that you may take at people in power at the time, it’s anyone’s guess as to whether those songs are even going to be relevant just a few years down the road. John Lennon knew how to speak universally though…he just needed a little from his friends from time to time.

Wait…I hear you saying. Since Gimme Some Truth is on Imagine, there’s no way that John needed outside help at this point, and surely there was no way that he was going to ask his former Beatles to help him finish the song. If you go back and look at the Beatles’ documentary on Disney+ though, that’s exactly what happened, as John brought this song in during the sessions for the Get Back project and was stuck with trying to find the right words to put into the choruses. In between the long hours of nothing getting done though, Paul McCartney was the one who actually chimed in, going over line by line to try to get the right words to fit in the cracks.

It appears that even Paul didn’t remember cowriting it at the time, until Peter Jackson eventually showed him the raw footage of them in the studio. If anything, this just dispels the rumor that the Beatles were at each other’s throats all the time. They may have had their fights, but these were musical brothers, and nothing was going to break that bond.
